Early Orthodontic Treatment for Children

Set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy, beautiful smiles

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At Islander Orthodontics, Dr. Borda provides comprehensive early orthodontic assessments to identify potential issues and determine the optimal timing for treatment.

Early orthodontic treatment—also called Phase 1 or interceptive treatment—can address developing problems while your child is still growing. This proactive approach can simplify or even eliminate the need for more extensive treatment later, setting the stage for a healthier, more confident smile.

What is Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment (Phase 1) is performed while your child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth, typically between ages 7 and 10. The goal is to guide jaw growth, create space for permanent teeth, and address bite issues before they become more serious.

Early treatment doesn't always mean your child will need braces right away. In many cases, we simply monitor development and intervene at the most effective time. When treatment is needed, it's usually shorter and more focused than comprehensive orthodontic treatment.

After Phase 1 treatment, there's typically a resting period during which we monitor the eruption of remaining permanent teeth. Phase 2 treatment (full braces) may or may not be necessary, depending on how teeth develop.

Why Age 7?

First Molars Have Erupted

By age 7, the first permanent molars and incisors have typically erupted, allowing Dr. Borda to evaluate the relationship between upper and lower jaws.

Growth is Active

Children are still growing, making it easier to guide jaw development and correct bite problems before growth is complete.

Early Detection

Some problems are easier to correct when caught early, before they become more severe or require more invasive treatment.

Prevention

Early intervention can prevent more serious problems from developing, potentially reducing or eliminating the need for tooth extractions or jaw surgery later.

Signs Your Child May Need Early Treatment

Watch for these warning signs that may indicate a need for early orthodontic evaluation:

Early or late loss of baby teeth

Difficulty chewing or biting

Mouth breathing

Thumb or finger sucking after age 5

Crowded, misplaced, or blocked-out teeth

Jaws that shift or make sounds

Difficulty speaking

Biting the cheek or roof of the mouth

Facial imbalance or asymmetry

Grinding or clenching teeth

Problems Early Treatment Can Address

Crossbites

When upper teeth bite inside lower teeth, crossbites can cause uneven jaw growth and facial asymmetry if left untreated. Early correction guides proper jaw development.

Severe Crowding

Early treatment can create space for permanent teeth to erupt properly, potentially eliminating the need for tooth extractions later.

Protruding Front Teeth

Teeth that stick out are more prone to injury. Early treatment can protect your child's smile and reduce the risk of trauma.

Underbites

When the lower jaw grows too far forward, early intervention can guide growth and prevent the need for jaw surgery in the future.

Excessive Overjet (Overbite)

When upper front teeth protrude excessively, early treatment can improve facial balance and reduce the risk of injury.

Harmful Oral Habits

Thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, and mouth breathing can affect dental and facial development. We can help break these habits and prevent long-term problems.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Guides Jaw Growth

Takes advantage of your child's natural growth to create proper jaw relationships and facial balance.

Creates Space

Helps permanent teeth erupt in better positions, potentially avoiding extractions or more complex treatment later.

Reduces Treatment Time

Addressing issues early can simplify or shorten future orthodontic treatment, if needed.

Improves Appearance

Corrects visible problems early, boosting your child's confidence during important developmental years.

Prevents Injury

Protruding front teeth are more vulnerable to trauma. Early treatment reduces this risk.

Improves Function

Corrects bite problems that can affect chewing, speaking, and breathing.

What to Expect During Early Treatment

1

Initial Evaluation

Dr. Borda will examine your child's teeth, jaws, and facial structure. We'll take X-rays and photos to assess development and identify any issues.

2

Treatment Plan

If early treatment is recommended, we'll create a customized plan tailored to your child's specific needs. We'll explain the process, timeline, and expected outcomes.

3

Active Treatment

Phase 1 treatment typically lasts 6-18 months. We may use appliances like expanders, partial braces, or retainers to guide growth and tooth development.

4

Resting Period

After Phase 1, we'll monitor your child's development while remaining permanent teeth erupt. We'll see your child every 6-12 months during this time.

5

Phase 2 (If Needed)

If comprehensive treatment is needed after all permanent teeth have erupted, it will typically be shorter and simpler thanks to early intervention.

Common Early Treatment Appliances

Palatal Expander

Widens the upper jaw to create space for teeth and correct crossbites. Most effective when used during active growth.

Partial Braces

Brackets placed on select teeth to guide eruption, correct rotations, or create space.

Space Maintainers

Hold space for permanent teeth when baby teeth are lost prematurely, preventing crowding and misalignment.

Habit Appliances

Help break harmful habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting that can affect dental development.
